Front cover - Mojo - David Bowie  I like the natural shot of this front cover,

Content page (4) - Babyshambles -Peter Dohertey

Image
Content page-  Babyshambles -Peter Dohertey  I like the use of text on both pages and how the orange colour of text is in theme with the colour of the beer pete is holding and his colout t shirt and the overall shade/effect of the image- (almost a burnt orange).

Initial ideas

Initial Ideas   For my initial ideas I explored the genre indie music. I think I want my genre/band to be an indie magazine but with a focus on alternative indie and female bands. I feel like female bands in th indie genre don't get enough publicity and possibly there is a lack of them therefore.  Then I started to name all the indie bands I like male or female and this can give me an idea for the sounds I want in my magazine, and also the aesthetic relating to each of these bands/artists could inspire the style of the magazine.  I think I will research further into a few indie bands/artists, and look at their album covers and aesthetic overall as this could inspire me.  The indie genre is also a culture I believe so I could therefore explore the indie culture and colours, etc. I believe alot of art is used on album covers which I could also analyse and explore.

Contents page-(3) -Mojo- Courtney Love

Image
Contents page - Mojo - Courtney Love I like the simplicity of this cotents page that it only has one image which is cut out of a womans body. And she is iconic. However it may be seen as boring as the article about her may have a single photo her also, which becomes a bit repetitive. This image is of Courtney love who was in a relatiuonship With famous lead singer of Nirvana - Kurt Cobian. Therefore she is a sort of iconic figure, thus possibly why she is on the contents page, however may not be famous enough to be on the front cover.

Contents page - (2) unknown

Image
Contents page - Unknown  I like the layout of the photos on this contents page. It looks like a jigsaw or peices of glass.I like the different sizes of the images and how it only shows parts of some.I think this is alternative and more intersting to look at than a sqaure image.

Front cover - NME - Jimi Hendrix

Image
Front cover -NME - Jimi Hendrix   I reallyu like the use of colour in this front cover design. I like how Jimi hendrix face is in black and white but hius clothes are really colourful. I also like the way text is written around his body in a freehand-style font . This magazine also has a colour sheme of pink purple and black and white, which i belive are interesting colours and it subverts the stereotype of women being the only gender assoiciated with pink.

Contents page -(1) just magazine

Image
Contents page- Just a magazine (unknown)   I like the use of imagery and horizontal across two pages. With the images above the titles od each section in the magazine. Im not entirely sure but the images may be relating to one of the titles from each column. I like this idea and it gives a simplistic, yet arty feel to the page. I like how the contents gows across teo pages as it dosent feel as squashed, and comes across artistic in this way. Also it is different to standard layout making it alternative which could relate to the music genre I am focusinf on (Indie).I may use this in my own magazine

Double page spread -(5) unknown magazine

Double page spread

Double page spread-(4) Q- Lady Gaga

Image
Double page spread - Q-Lady Gaga  This double- page spread is laid out with the image situated on the left  and the text on th right page. This text is counted as hard text, as there is alot of it. I like the idea of making the hard text look more intersting and exciting by covering parts of it with a big letter 'L', due to it being aboput Lady Gaga. The fact that the image of Lady Gaga covers a whole page is highlighting she is a huge artist and also the fact it is a mid shot - is due to her being so famous and people wanting to get a closer look of her possibly. Moreover  the use of her being in black and white gives a classy/professional affect. The colour of black and white also goes well with the big Red l as red and black and white are usually colours associated with being sexy. Thus creating an image of lady gaga being this cool, sexy, powerful woman.

Double page spread -(3) NME - Lilly Allen

Image
Double page spread NME - Lilly Allen

Double page spread -(2) NME - Mark Ronson

Image
Double page spread NME - Mark Ronson  I like how the title spreads across two pages and may consider to do this for my own magazine page.I feel like it is a good way to bring all the conventions of the page together and links them e.g the image, title, and text. It also is good as it makes the reader look at both pages therefore catching their eye, due to them having to read the title from one side of the page to the other. I would like to pick out a piece of the interview and put the letters in bold and a bigger size, something of interest or a statement. I like how the image takes up a whole page and has props that are interesting and relate to the title.E,g - hammer- relates to the revenge.

Double page spread - (1) NME - lana del rey

Image
Double page spread - NME   This double page spread has the image on the left and writing including title on the right. This is a pretty average layout, however still looks stylish.  The colour of the image is black and white, which is simple but makes the eye concentrated to the image. I like the colour of the light blue, its refreshing and stands out. However the colours are not particularly exciting in the way they have been lain out on the page.

Different fonts

Front Cover - The wire - Cecil Taylor

Image
Front cover  I like the bold pink title, its saying its not afraid to stand out. The background is really interesting it includes pieces of art and an old jazz book - which relates to the music genre this musician does. I like how the colour of the title doesn't match the rest of the magazines colours, therefore there is no strict colour scheme.   I may consider using this for my own magazine as I think it is refreshing and represents the magazine as being open minded and not strict. The style of photo choice is interesting as it is a natural pose and different to usual poses , creating a more natural/organic visual experience. I like how there is an older person on the front cover, because I may be wrong but I think a lot of magazine tend to but younger people on the covers, as it 'sells better', possibly, however this isn't just about looks its about music , which shouldn't  matter about age,

Front cover (5)- The Wire - shirley collins

Image
Front cover  I like the use of the square in the left bottom corner, having a pattern and it says the number of the magazine. The pattern is cool and edgy, I like the idea of incorporating art into my magazine and may even ask someone to design a piece of art for me to add in my magazine.

Front cover (4) - Mojo - The smiths

Image
Front cover   This front cover has a colour theme of pink, white, again like the others this could be subverting the stereotype of women being associated with pink and men with blue. I like the two other pictures as well as the main picture not just because there both interesting to look at but also because they add extra colour to the front cover representing diversity and culture. I would like to use the technique of the band/musician covering the magazine title. This is a common style to use in music magazines, and looks edgy. I like the sentence on the image and how it is split up in 3 parts one below each other. This is an interesting way to split up the text and thus offers a more innovative layout.

Front Cover (3) NME - Joe strummer

Image
Front cover  This magazine is mainly dedicated to Joe Strummer .It refers to him as a 'punk icon'. Thus enticing punk lovers and the rest of society to be interested in this magazine especially.  I like the use of the black and white main image of Joe Strummer (when he was young). It gives a nostalgic feel to the magazine, and comes across very stylish and classic. I like the way NME really personalise the front cover to the image and ties it in with the rest of the theme, titles, etc.  Yet again they have used a bold statement for a quote of Jo Strummer:' Don't write slogans write truths'- this ties in with Joe Strummer being highly respected in the music industry and seen as a classic and wise that he is able to make these bold, wise statements. The statement adds in with the style of this magazine, as being bold classic and at times nostalgic. I like however how the nostalgic side of this image is mixed with the bold and colourful font of

Front cover (2) - NME - Lana Del Rey

Image
Front cover - NME  In this front cover, the creator of this magazine has decided to entice the reader with names of famous people above the story which they are in. This allows the readers attention to be drawn to the name before the story, and as they are famous people it will catch someones eyes quicker as they will be able to identify the celebrities quicker. The main image is positioned central on the page, to be the main focus.I like the positioning of Lana Del Ray and the rebellious/confident pose she is holding. It shows her personality, makes her character seem more interesting and possibly reveals about what kind of music she makes .I will consider using  a statement pose on my front cover,to reveal the alternative/ rule breaking? nature of my magazine and music genre.(Its different to  the usual generic pose of smiling thus, making the front cover look more interesting and stand out from over magazine front covers). The story headings are quite vague, making the

Contents page - (1)Kerrang

Image
Contents page analysis  This contents page is in a block format, creating an impact and punk style. Also the font style is very clear and therefore easy to read. There is also a colour scheme, throughout the contents page of yellow, black and read. The contents is located on the right hand side. I like the common colour theme through there also.It uses yellow for the title of the subject and black for the background, and red for the number and black for the topic. The image is located to the left of the screen and fills up a lot of the page. Also on the contents page there is win a prize opportunity - however I don't think id use this on my own magazine as I believe it makes it look a bit less professional and classy. But they link the competition to the band ; 'Metallica kill e'm with vans!',this benefits the reader as they have the opportunity to benefit  more than just buying a magazine. I like the text at the bottom of the page, as i

Front Cover Analysis - 'Q' magazine

Image
Front cover analysis The colour used for this cover, has a primary theme of white, black and red. This is present in the 'Q' logo and all over the cover. The main image is located central of the page and is in black and white, which makes it fit with the colour scheme. It gives it an almost classic edge - to the image of Kurt Cobain almost representing Nirvana to be a band to be  honoured/a classic band. The splash of red offers a bright almost creative splash of colour to inject some energy into the magazine and entice the reader. I like the use of the main image colour and font being consistent throughout the front cover page, as it is allowing the reader to be focused on the image and therefore creates an impact on the aesthetic and feeling about the magazine and its content.therefore adding value to the music/bands/culture of that genre. I like the classic and simple colour scheme choice, and would consider using it for my magazine, however I don't want it lo

Preliminary task

Image
Preliminary task  Before we began our music magazines, we had to complete a preliminary task, to create a front cover and contents page of a school magazine. Including the codes and conventions of a school magazine. We first of all researched other examples of school magazines, as inspiration. I found that the images chosen were usually 1-4 teenagers on the front cover with smiling faces. They were usually in the background setting of the school thus making it relevant to the magazine. We were told to take a medium close up for the image on the front cover. This allows the persons uniform to be in shot and you are able to read the expression of the person. I chose a simple snappy name for a title, 'scoop' related to the idea of getting the scoop of information.  I chose 6 stories to put on the front cover, this allows the reader to get a feel for what the magazine is about however doesn't overwhelm them at the same time. I chose to use a few other i
